Recap of NHBPM

 WEGO Health Network did  their own Health Blogger version all month long and I was happy be part it.

"As part of our ongoing mission to empower Health Activists, educate, and raise awareness, WEGO Health will be recognizing health bloggers during the month of November. You may have heard about National Blog Posting Month or NaBloPoMo, a month dedicated to the art of blogging, taking it to a new level by pushing all participants to blog every single day of the month."
 I must admit I was a little bit concerned about posting every single day for 30 days straight..too much pressure..but it turned out to be fine. My saving grace was the two break days we were given. I am happy to return to my schedule of posting--whenever I want to.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to share a recipe every single day because I ran out of storage space for photos and need to figure that one out. Arrrghhh.

Prepping for Christmas

My mind is already racing just thinking about what I will prepare this year. Having to prepare food  for vegan, gluten free, carnivores and a raw foodie (me) can be quite the task. I have to find the perfect marriage of combinations to please everyone and it can be tough!
But, to prepare myself mentally I need to think clearly and that means simplicity. For me simplicity will take the form of a "vacation" from preparing my foods as I visit Banana Island for a few days.
Here is what the menu for me on Banana Island looks like:
Eat Them When They Look Like This!

Breakfast
10 banana smoothie

Lunch
8 bananas cut up, smothered in banana milk (2 bananas blended)

Dinner
5 bananas eaten the old fashion way--peel, bite, chew!

See the pattern here? It is simply mono meals all day long of JUST bananas. Simplicity, clarity, healing.
Now its time to focus on the meal plans for Christmas Eve and Christmas. That involves searching all of my GF, DF, vegan and meat based recipes for the rest of the family. I actually have fun going through all of my recipes and pulling together meals that they have enjoyed in years past. I then mix them up a bit so they have at least 2 new dishes each year. Raw and cooked pies will be on the menu for sure!

I consider eating the Standard American Diet a "condition". Why? Because so many illnesses stem from it. I am talking about those who consume the SAD diet 100% of the time. Rarely eating any fresh, raw, fruits or vegetables, but consuming only cooked, toxic foods like animal products , white sugar, and processed packaged foods. Top 10 Food Additives To Avoid

1. Artificial Sweeteners

Aspartame, (E951) more popularly known as Nutrasweet and Equal, is often found in foods labeled "diet" or "sugar free". Aspartame is believed to be carcinogenic and accounts for more reports of adverse reactions than all other foods and food additives combined. Aspartame is not your friend. Aspartame is a neurotoxin and carcinogen. Known to erode intelligence and affect short-term memory, the components of this toxic sweetener may lead to a wide variety of ailments including brain tumor, diseases like lymphoma, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue, emotional disorders like depression and anxiety attacks, dizziness, headaches, nausea, mental confusion, migraines and seizures.
Acesulfame-K, a relatively new artificial sweetener found in baking goods, gum and gelatin, has not been thoroughly tested and has been linked to kidney tumors. 2. High Fructose Corn Syrup

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a highly-refined artificial sweetener which has become the number one source of calories in America. It is found in almost all processed foods. HFCS packs on the pounds faster than any other ingredient, increases your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels, and contributes to the development of diabetes and tissue damage, among other harmful effects. Found in: most processed foods, breads, candy, flavored yogurts, salad dressings, canned vegetables, cereals.

3. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG / E621)

MSG is an amino acid used as a flavor enhancer in soups, salad dressings, chips, frozen entrees, and many restaurant foods. MSG is known as an excitotoxin, a substance which overexcites cells to the point of damage or death. Studies show that regular consumption of MSG may result in adverse side effects which include depression, disorientation, eye damage, fatigue, headaches, and obesity. MSG effects the neurological pathways of the brain and disengaged the "I'm full" function which explains the effects of weight gain. Found in: Chinese food (Chinese Restaurant Syndrome ) many snacks, chips, cookies, seasonings, most Campbell Soup products, frozen dinners, lunch meats.

4. Trans Fat

Trans fat is used to enhance and extend the shelf life of food products and is among the most dangerous substances that you can consume. Found in deep-fried fast foods and certain processed foods made with margarine or partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, trans fats are formed by a process called hydrogenation. Numerous studies show that trans fat increases LDL cholesterol levels while decreasing HDL (“good”) cholesterol, increases the risk of heart attacks, heart disease and strokes, and contributes to increased inflammation, diabetes and other health problems. Oils and fat are now forbidden on the Danish market if they contain trans fatty acids exceeding 2 per cent, a move that effectively bans partially hydrogenated oils. Found in: margarine, chips and crackers, baked goods, fast foods.

5. Common Food Dyes

Studies show that artificial colorings which are found in soda, fruit juices and salad dressings, may contribute to behavioral problems in children and lead to a significant reduction in IQ. Animal studies have linked other food colorings to cancer. Watch out for these ones: Blue #1 and Blue #2 (E133) - Banned in Norway, Finland and France. May cause chromosomal damage Found in: candy, cereal, soft drinks, sports drinks and pet foods. Red dye # 3 (also Red #40) (E124) - Banned in 1990 after 8 years of debate from use in many foods and cosmetics. This dye continues to be on the market until supplies run out! Has been proven to cause thyroid cancer and chromosomal damage in laboratory animals, may also interfere with brain-nerve transmission. Found in: fruit cocktail, maraschino cherries, cherry pie mix, ice cream, candy, bakery products and more! Yellow #6 (E110) and Yellow Tartrazine (E102) - Banned in Norway and Sweden. Increases the number of kidney and adrenal gland tumors in laboratory animals, may cause chromosomal damage. Found in: American cheese, macaroni and cheese, candy and carbonated beverages, lemonade and more!

6. Sodium Sulfite (E221)

Preservative used in wine-making and other processed foods. According to the FDA, approximately one in 100 people is sensitive to sulfites in food. The majority of these individuals are asthmatic, suggesting a link between asthma and sulfites. Individuals who are sulfite sensitive may experience headaches, breathing problems, and rashes. In severe cases, sulfites can actually cause death by closing down the airway altogether, leading to cardiac arrest. Found in: Wine and dried fruit.

7. Sodium Nitrate/Sodium Nitrite

Sodium nitrate (or sodium nitrite) is used as a preservative, coloring and flavoring in bacon, ham, hot dogs, luncheon meats, corned beef, smoked fish and other processed meats. This ingredient, which sounds harmless, is actually highly carcinogenic once it enters the human digestive system. There, it forms a variety of nitrosamine compounds that enter the bloodstream and wreak havoc with a number of internal organs: the liver and pancreas in particular. Sodium nitrite is widely regarded as a toxic ingredient, and the USDA actually tried to ban this additive in the 1970's but was vetoed by food manufacturers who complained they had no alternative for preserving packaged meat products. Why does the industry still use it? Simple: this chemical just happens to turn meats bright red. It's actually a color fixer, and it makes old, dead meats appear fresh and vibrant. Found in: hotdogs, bacon, ham, luncheon meat, cured meats, corned beef, smoked fish or any other type of processed meat.

8. BHA and BHT (E320)

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydrozyttoluene (BHT) are preservatives found in cereals, chewing gum, potato chips, and vegetable oils. This common preservative keeps foods from changing color, changing flavor or becoming rancid. Effects the neurological system of the brain, alters behavior and has potential to cause cancer. BHA and BHT are oxidants which form cancer-causing reactive compounds in your body. Found in: Potato chips, gum, cereal, frozen sausages, enriched rice, lard, shortening, candy, jello.

9. Sulfur Dioxide (E220)

Sulfur additives are toxic and in the United States of America, the Federal Drugs Administration have prohibited their use on raw fruit and vegetables. Adverse reactions include: bronchial problems particularly in those prone to asthma, hypotension (low blood pressure), flushing tingling sensations or anaphylactic shock. It also destroys vitamins B1 and E. Not recommended for consumption by children. The International Labour Organization says to avoid E220 if you suffer from conjunctivitis, bronchitis, emphysema, bronchial asthma, or cardiovascular disease. Found in: beer, soft drinks, dried fruit, juices, cordials, wine, vinegar, and potato products.

10. Potassium Bromate

An additive used to increase volume in some white flour, breads, and rolls, potassium bromate is known to cause cancer in animals. Even small amounts in bread can create problems for humans. Found in: breads

You Probably Didn't Know....

Propolis, the "caulk" honeybees use to patch holes in their hives, has been used as a natural remedy since ancient times, treating ills ranging from sore throats and burns to allergies.
New research has revealed another exciting use for this seemingly miraculous substance, this time in the fight against cancer.

Propolis Slows Tumor Growth

Propolis has a number of well-known therapeutic properties, including potent antioxidant and anti-microbial action, and healing, analgesic, anesthetic, and anti-inflammatory properties. In the hive, bees use it as a disinfectant against bacteria and viruses, helping to seal cracks and "embalm" invaders that are too large to carry out.
It's been used for thousands of years in folk medicine, but despite its plethora of active components, research on this compound, and therefore its modern medical uses, is limited.
Researchers from the University of Chicago Medical Center, intrigued by propolis' anti-cancer potential, decided to look at one of its bioactive components, caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), and its impact on human prostate cancer cells.
In cells grown in a lab, even small doses of CAPE slowed the growth of tumor cells. And when low oral doses were given to mice with prostate tumors, tumor growth slowed by 50 percent! What's more, feeding CAPE to mice daily caused the tumors to stop growing, although they returned when the CAPE was removed from their diets.
This suggests the propolis compound works by impacting signaling networks that control cancerous cell growth, rather than by killing the cells directly. However, there are at least four studies on propolis' apoptotic properties, indicating that technically it is capable of directly killing cancer cells, including prostate cancer, melanoma and more, as well.1
This is not the first time propolis has shown promise in treating cancer. In 2009, propolis was found to suppress the growth of neurofibromatosis-associated tumors (tumors on nerve tissue) by blocking PAK1 signaling. Researchers noted:2
"Since more than 70% of human cancers such as breast and prostate cancers require the kinase PAK1 for their growth, it is quite possible that GPE [green propolis extract] could be potentially useful for the treatment of these cancers, as is Bio 30 [a CAPE-based propolis extract]."

Propolis Has Powerful Immune-Modulating, Anti-Inflammatory Properties

What makes natural compounds so exciting, and often so powerful, is that they don't simply exhibit one therapeutic action the way, say, most drugs work. Instead, they contain numerous bioactive components that may exert dozens of beneficial actions within your body. This appears to be the case with propolis, which has been found to play a role in over 80 conditions, including:3

Writing in Clinical Reviews in Allergy and Immunology, researchers expanded on some of propolis' potential effects:4
"Propolis, a waxy substance produced by the honeybee, has been adopted as a form of folk medicine since ancient times. It has a wide spectrum of alleged applications including potential anti-infection and anticancer effects. Many of the therapeutic effects can be attributed to its immunomodulatory functions. The composition of propolis can vary according to the geographic locations from where the bees obtained the ingredients.
Two main immunopotent chemicals have been identified as caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) and artepillin C. Propolis, CAPE, and artepillin C have been shown to exert summative immunosuppressive function on T lymphocyte subsets but paradoxically activate macrophage function.
On the other hand, they also have potential antitumor properties by different postulated mechanisms such as suppressing cancer cells proliferation via its anti-inflammatory effects; decreasing the cancer stem cell populations; blocking specific oncogene signaling pathways; exerting antiangiogenic effects; and modulating the tumor microenvironment.
The good bioavailability by the oral route and good historical safety profile makes propolis an ideal adjuvant agent for future immunomodulatory or anticancer regimens."

Protein Intake Also Crucial for Cancers

Earlier this month I interviewed Dr. Ron Rosedale for several hours. He is one of the first physicians in the U.S. that started measuring leptin levels clinically and was far ahead of the curve on this one. In our interview, he helped me understand the major importance that excessive protein intake can have on cancer growth.
The mTOR pathway is short for mammalian target of rapamycin. This pathway is ancient but relatively recently appreciated and has only been known for less than 20 years. Odds are very high your doctor was never taught this is medical school and isn't even aware of it. Many new cancer drugs are actually being targeted to use this pathway. Drugs using this pathway have also been given to animals to radically extend their lifespan. But you don't have to use drugs to get this pathway to work for you.
You can biohack your body and merely restrict your protein intake and replace the decreased protein with healthy fats as this will provide virtually identical benefits as these dangerous and expensive drugs.
Eating excessive protein can be an additional synergistically powerful mechanism. Dr. Rosedale believes that when you consume protein in levels higher than one gram of protein per kilogram of LEAN body mass you can activate the mTOR pathway, which will radically increase your risk of cancers. It is very easy to consume excess protein and my guess is that most people reading this are. I know I was, and as a result of this new insight I have reduced my protein intake by about half.


To determine your lean body mass find out your percent body fat and subtract from 100. So if you are 20% body fat you would have 80% lean body mass. Just multiply that times your current weight to get lean body mass. For most people this means restricting protein intake from 35 to 75 grams. Pregnant women and those working out extensively need about 25% more protein though.
Of course when you reduce protein you need to replace it with other calories, so the key is to replace the lost calories with high-quality fats such as avocados, butter, coconut oil, olives, olive oil, nuts and eggs. It is also very helpful to avoid eating anything for three hours before going to bed as this allows you to have relatively low blood sugars while you are sleeping. This is another good trick to move your body to fat burning mode.
Nearly everyone is primarily in carb burning mode because of the amount of carbohydrate content that they consume. The beauty of shifting over to fat burning mode is that it virtually eliminates hunger. Intermittent fasting is one way to help achieve this, but radically cutting back on non-vegetable carbs is also very important. Coconut oil is particularly useful to use in making the transition to fat burning mode as it is primarily short and medium chain fats which break down very quickly and can be used as an energy source which is important for countering the decreased energy and other physical challenges that many encounter in the several weeks it typically takes to make the transition to fat burning mode.

Other Natural Remedies Also Show Cancer Promise

One of the reasons why conventional cancer treatment is such a dismal failure in the United States is because it relies on chemotherapy. Chemotherapy drugs are, by their very nature, extremely toxic and typically work against your body's natural ability to fight cancer, e.g. destroying host immunity instead of supporting it.
One of the biggest drawbacks to chemotherapy is the fact that it destroys healthy cells throughout your body right along with cancer cells, a "side effect" that often leads to accelerated death, not healing.
Another devastating side effect of chemotherapy is the way it actually supports the more chemo-resistant and malignant cell sub populations within tumors (e.g. cancer stem cells), both killing the more benign cells and/or quiescent cells within the tumor that keep it slow-growing, or even harmless.
As a result, this unleashes a more aggressive, treatment-resistant type of cancer to wreak havoc on your body.
Like propolis, a handful of natural compounds have been discovered that show promise for treating cancer without such toxic effects. Some of these even exhibit an effect called "selective cytotoxicity," which means they are able to kill cancer cells while leaving healthy cells and tissue unharmed, and even benefited one such compound is bromelain, an enzyme that can be extracted from pineapple stems. Research published in the journal Planta Medica found that bromelain was superior to the chemotherapy drug 5-fluorauracil in treating cancer in an animal study.5
Researchers stated:
"This antitumoral effect [of bromelain] was superior to that of 5-FU [5-fluorouracil], whose survival index was approximately 263 %, relative to the untreated control."
What makes this impact particularly impressive is that the bromelain worked without causing additional harm to the animals. The chemo drug 5-fluorauracil, on the other hand, has a relatively unsuccessful and dangerous track record despite being used for nearly 40 years. Selective cytotoxicity is indeed a property that is only found among natural compounds; no chemotherapy drug yet developed is capable of this effect. Aside from bromelain, other examples of natural compounds that have been found to kill cancer cells without harming healthy cells include:
  • Vitamin C: Dr. Ronald Hunninghake carried out a 15-year research project called RECNAC (cancer spelled backwards). His groundbreaking research in cell cultures showed that vitamin C was selectively cytotoxic against cancer cells.
  • Eggplant extract: Solasodine rhamnosyl glycosides (BEC), which are a class of compounds extracted from plants of the Solanaceae family, such as eggplant, tomato, potato, Bell peppers, and tobacco, can also impact only cancerous cells leaving normal cells alone. Eggplant extract cream appears to be particularly useful in treating skin cancer. Dr. Bill E. Cham, a leading researcher in this area, explains:
    "The mode of action of SRGs [glycoalkaloids solasodine rhamnosy glycosides (BEC)] is unlike any current antineoplastic [anti-tumor] agent. Specific receptors for the SRGs present only on cancer cells but not normal cells are the first step of events that lead to apoptosis in cancer cells only, and this may explain why during treatment the cancer cells were being eliminated and normal cells were replacing the killed cancer cells with no scar tissue being formed."
  • Turmeric (Curcumin Extract): Of all the natural cancer fighters out there, this spice has been the most intensely researched for exhibiting selective cytotoxicity.6 Remarkably, in a 2011 study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, rats administered curcumin, the primary polyphenol in turmeric, saw a decrease in experimentally-induced brain tumors in 9 out of 11 treated, while noting that the curcumin did not affect the viability of brain cells "suggesting that curcumin selectively targets the transformed [cancerous] cells."7

Natural Strategies for Cancer Prevention

When it comes to cancer and other chronic diseases, effective prevention trumps progressive treatments in my eyes. I believe you can virtually eliminate your risk of ever developing cancer (and radically improve your chances of recovering from cancer if you currently have it) by following some relatively simple risk reduction strategies—all of which help promote a healthful biological environment in which your cells can thrive and combat disease naturally.
  • Optimize your vitamin D levels.
  • Reduce or eliminate your processed food, fructose and grain carbohydrate intake.
  • Control your fasting insulin and leptin levels. Normalizing your insulin levels is one of the most powerful physical actions you can take to lower your risk of cancer, and improved insulin and leptin control is the natural outcome of reducing or eliminating fructose, grains, and processed foods from your diet.
  • Normalize your ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fats by taking a high-quality krill oil and reducing your intake of most processed vegetable oils.
  • Get regular exercise. One of the primary ways exercise lowers your risk for cancer is by reducing elevated insulin levels, which creates a low sugar environment that discourages the growth and spread of cancer cells, which thrive on sugar-based metabolism (anaerobic glycolysis). Controlling insulin levels is one of the most powerful ways to reduce your cancer risks. Additionally, exercise improves the circulation of immune cells in your blood. Your immune system is your first line of defense against everything from minor illnesses like a cold right up to devastating, life-threatening diseases like cancer.The trick about exercise, though, is understanding how to use it as a precise tool. This ensures you are getting enough to achieve the benefit, not too much to cause injury, and the right variety to balance your entire physical structure and maintain strength and flexibility, and aerobic and anaerobic fitness levels. If you have limited time, high-intensity Peak Fitness exercises are your best bet but ideally you should have a good strength-training program as well.
  • Get regular, good-quality sleep.
  • Reduce your exposure to environmental toxins like pesticides, household chemical cleaners, synthetic air fresheners and air pollution.
  • Limit your exposure and provide protection for yourself from EMF produced by cell phone towers, base stations, cell phones and WiFi stations. On May 31, 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an arm of the World Health Organization (WHO), declared that cell phones are "possibly carcinogenic to humans."
  • Avoid frying or charbroiling your food. Boil, poach or steam your foods instead.
  • Have a tool to permanently reprogram the neurological short-circuiting that can activate cancer genes. Even the CDC states that 85 percent of disease is caused by emotions. It is likely that this factor may be more important than all the other physical ones listed here, so make sure this is addressed. Energy psychology seems to be one of the best approaches and my particular favorite tool, as you may know, is the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).
  • Eat at least one-third of your diet in the form of raw food.

Very simple, I would sleep more. I feel like I never have enough time in the day to do things, at a leisurely rate, this extra time would allow that and then I would still have time to get my 8 hours of sleep at night!

What My Doctor Taught Me


My doctor taught me just how ignorant he was when it comes to health and its relationship to nutrition and lifestyle choices. I have heard that MD's only have about 2 weeks worth of nutrition classes/instruction and it was proven to me by his ignorance/denial of the facts.
"Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food", as Hippocrates so wisely said many moons ago.
Chemicals with every bite...unless you choose organic! Think I'm wrong, guess again. Educate yourself and KNOW where your food is coming from, that is if you care about your health.

Traveling Raw

I am trying to relax for 5 days and enjoy some laid back, slow paced, mountain life. Traveling while eating raw has become second hand to me now. I just pack up the home grown wheat grass, my manual juicer, some broccoli sprouts, fresh fruit, travel blender, and buy the rest when we arrive at our destination. Easy!
 

This year will be quite the vacation, as I do not have to cook up the Thanksgiving meal. We are going to a great restaurant here in the mountains and will be treated to a home cooked meal. This restaurant treats everyone like family and makes most everything from scratch. They even are going to provide a vegan option for our daughter and salads for me. All I had to do was call ahead and speak to the person in charge and it was done. Don't be afraid to ask for special favors when dining out. You will be pleasantly surprised just how accommodating some establishments will be.

As I've written before I think that approaching health care should include a balance between traditional medicine and alternative. I believe we can benefit from both but the key is educating ourselves so that we, as the patient, can determine what the proper balance is. One of the authors of the book below lives right here in our town and we are so blessed to have such a wise man right within our reach. I would like to support his new book because I know that almost all of us have been touched by cancer. Perhaps a family member, friend or you personally.

My Favorite Blogs and Mono Meal Mondays

 

I wanted to share with you my favorite blogs. I have oh so many but will try to limit the list to a handful.
Note that I am not putting them in any particular order. Also some of these sites are not raw or vegan. But there are things about each one that I enjoy and therefore felt worth sharing. They are fun to read and I enjoy discovering how others are living their lives.

A few posts ago I shared some info on eating mono meals. Well Monday has turned out to be my mono meal day for some unknown reason. It has just developed into a pattern. So here is an example of an entire days worth of mono meals. Keep in mind, if one is trying to do a major detox or give their digestive system a rest you would want to pick ONE fruit and eat that at every meal. I am not doing that so I have a different fruit at each of my meals.

Breakfast

 


Upon waking I drink a massive glass of purified water followed by a shot of my home grown wheat grass, 20 minutes later. I prefer to do my workout prior to eating my first solids of the day, and I do my workout in the morning, thus the liquid b-fast. If I am not mono mealing then my b-fast would be my water, wheatgrass shot, and then after working out a massive green smoothie.

Lunch

Lunch will consist of a minimum of 5 truly ripe bananas, more if I am really hungry or worked out hard that day.

Dinner


Dinner is as simple as cut up grapefruit, usually 4-5 of them! Sometimes I may sprinkle on a little steevia if I am wanting something sweeter.
 
+JMJ+ Today I am grateful for feeling much better! This germ really took me out for the count. Usually I am spared the colds that the rest of the family get, but not this time. Hopefully it will be the only one this season!

Today's blog prompt--wow, a good one yet again. There are so many things I'd like to change about health care but the two biggest are:
  1. The lies. Do your research! Don't always take your doctor's word for things. You as the patient must be educated.
  2. "Pharmocracy"

The other day I made a very simple, oil free dressing that I'd like to share. I have been really indulging in organic raspberries the past several weeks. Pricey little berries that they are, but I really enjoy them so much so it is worth it for me to spend almost $4 for a small container.

Raspberry Ginger Dressing

Juice of 1 ruby red grapefruit
1/2 heaping cup fresh raspberries
Tiny slice of ginger, adjust for your taste
In a small blender, blend all ingredients until smooth. Enjoy!

Cranberries are in season and I have been buying bag after bag of organic cranberries. I put them in any recipe that I can, just for an excuse to eat these amazing little berries. I have been using them in the morning green smoothies and the taste has been amazing!

Cranberry Raspberry Smoothie

4 bananas
1/2 C raw organic cranberries
1/2 C fresh, organic, raspberries
3 cabbage leaves, torn into strips
1 C sunflower greens, or 2 cups green of your choice like spinach, kale or collard
Blend all of the ingredients in a high speed blender until creamy. Enjoy!

Negative Feedback



Advice for dealing with negative feedback in your community

This is today's blog prompt and I love what Angela Stokes said someone once taught her about this very subject. She said that it is best to make comments on someone's blog the same as if you were making a comment in their home. Therefore if one gets a negative comment posted to their blog, if it is rude in tone or belittling, then they should act the same way they would if that person were in their home. The comments should be removed from the blog the same way the person should be removed from ones home. Made sense to me. Some what of a wake up call to be aware of how we comment and the tone our comments may make, when responding on other's blogs. Good advice.

Today I wanted to share how I like to use dates to sweeten recipes.



 I make a thick date paste by soaking as many dates as desired in fresh coconut water.


Simply cover the dates, remove all pits from dates first, with the coconut water. Cover the bowl and place it in the refrigerator over night. If you do not have access to coconuts simply use purified water.
 In the morning, place the dates into a food processor or blender and begin to process them, adding a little bit of the soak water at a time until you achieve the consistency of a thick frosting.

Store your date paste in the refrigerator for up to 1 week or freeze in batches for longer storage.
Use your yummy date paste in any recipe requiring sweetener.

How about a delicious recipe??

If you could make just ONE easy health change--leading you closer to a clean, pure diet, would you do it? Here is a super easy, super sweet and delicious way. By adding just one green smoothie to your daily diet you can see improvements that you didn't think possible. Swap out your routine breakfast with a green smoothie and just watch what happens.
You can use any green of your choice and remember to alternate your greens each day. For example, use kale today, spinach tomorrow, collards on Thursday and then back to kale on Friday, spinach on Saturday and collards on Sunday. You get the picture. Just don't use the exact same green two days in a row. Simple!
To keep it super simple you can buy pre-washed, bagged greens for your smoothies.
 That way you can throw together your b-fast in less than 2 minutes. All it entails is putting ingredients into a blender.


Mache Berry Smoothie (serves 6 so adjust accordingly for smaller servings)

2 C purified water

1 organic apple

It is Ridiculous.....

Today's topic:

Call BS on something. What’s something that is just ridiculous?


I feel it is ridiculous to think that one cannot stay raw during the winter months. I mean, does food really warm you up?  I am assuming that since humans are warm blooded mammals we do not need warm food to keep us warm in the winter. If we did we would have to be eating the warm foods constantly to stay warm. Plus the fact that most of us live in homes that are comfortably heated during the cool winter months! Now if it is one's CHOICE not to remain fully raw that is one thing but if it is an excuse, that is the ridiculous part. Hint: Get a dehydrator and you can warm up your raw foods safely without destroying the enzymes. You also can safely warm raw soups on the stove. Use a food thermometer as you warm it and do not allow it to reach 112 degrees. Take off immediately and pour it out of the pan because the temp will continue to rise. Just my opinion.

Cranberry Pear Salad Two Ways

Option #1
4 organic pears, diced
1/4 C organic fresh cranberries, chopped fine
1/4 C raw walnuts, soaked 6 hours
organic raisins, soaked 30 min
juice of 1 small lemon
Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl and serve. Enjoy!




Option #2
4 organic pears, diced
1/4 C organic fresh cranberries, chopped fine
1/4 C raw walnuts, soaked 6 hours
organic raisins, soaked 30 min
1/2 C organic raspberries
1 clementine, peeled and sectioned
juice of 1 small lemon
Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl and serve. Enjoy!

One of My Favorite Things

Since I don't like narrowing down things to "my favorite", because many things share the number one spot, I will say one of my favorite things that is not health-related, but may likely improve my life, is CAMPING. In particular, one of my favorite parts of camping is sitting around the campfire at night for hours. I feel so relaxed and at peace.


I have been enjoying organic apples so much and am so happy it is apple season! The other day I threw together this super simple lunch. This also would be nice with some pine nuts sprinkled on top.

3 organic apples, diced

3 organic pears, diced

handful of organic raisins, that have been soaked 30 min.

3 stalks of organic celery, sliced thin

drizzle of fresh lemon juice

cinnamon to taste

Community Care Package

If I had to create a care package for the members of my blog it would contain the following:
  • A copy of the book, The Hippocrates Diet and Health Program, by Ann Wigmore
  • A copy of the book, The Wheatgrass Book, by Ann Wigmore
  • Organic sprouting seeds (broccoli, wheat grass, sunflower)
  • Sprouting jars and lids
  • Sprouting trays


A few days ago I mentioned I would share my recipe for Raw Cranberry Sauce, just in time for Thanksgiving and Christmas; I like it at both. I also have a killer Cranberry Pear Salad, made two ways, that I will share soon.



Raw Cranberry Sauce

3 organic apples, rough chop
6 Medjool dates, soak for 30 min, save soak water
1 1/2 Cups organic cranberries
1 clementine, peeled
Cinnamon, optional

In a food processor add the cranberries. Pulse until chopped into small chunks. Next add the  apple,dates and clementine, pulse. Add some of the saved soak water if needed to get the consistency you prefer. Sprinkle with cinnamon if desired. Gobble, gobble it up!
